Severe weather - heatwave

Stay cool

Homes can sometimes overheat during warmer weather. One in five homes are likely to overheat even in cooler summers. Some people are particularly vulnerable to heat (children, elderly, chronically ill) and for them a hot home can lead to worsening health problems or even kill.

In preparation for warmer weather, follow a heatwave checklist to see if your home is at risk of overheating and see what you can do to help the problem.

Advice to stay safe in warm weather

  • Stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm.
  • Find shade wherever possible. Always keep babies and toddlers in the shade when you can.
  • Keep hydrated with cool drinks especially when travelling.
  • Wear UV protective sunglasses, preferably wrap-around to minimise sun exposure.
  • Apply at least Spf30 to areas of the skin exposed to the sun.
  • Wear loose fitting closes and wear a hat to cover your head and face. This should minimise the chance of sunburn.
