Low income benefits

If you need help with your living expenses or housing costs you may be able to claim the following.

Income Support
This is extra money to help people aged 16 to 59 years old on a low income.  For further information visit Jobcentre Plus.

Housing benefit
Housing benefit helps people on a low income to pay their rent.

Council tax benefit
You can claim council tax benefit if you need help with your council tax bill whether you are working or not.

Working Tax Credit
You can claim this if you are in paid work with low earnings and you may get a higher amount if you have children or a disability. For further information visit the Inland Revenue.  

Child Tax Credit
You can claim this if you are in or out of work and have children. For further information visit the Inland Revenue.  

Pension Credit
Pension Credit is an entitlement for people aged 60 or over living in Great Britain. Further information can be found on the the Pension Service website.

NHS costs
If you have a low income you might be entitled to get help with health costs including prescriptions, dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs. For further information visit the Department of Health

The Family Fund
The Family Fund gives grants to lower income families with severely disabled children for things that make life easier and more enjoyable. Further information can be found on the Family Fund website.

Social Fund - Help with one off expenses
The Social Fund provides lump sum payments, grants and loans. You may be able to get help from the Social Fund for important costs that are hard to pay for out of your regular income.  Further information is available on the Department for Work and Pensions website.
