Winter maintenance
Ealing has a winter maintenance plan to reduce the risk to the travelling public by the hazardous effects of snow and ice during the winter months. This plan involves spreading grit on the roads and footway when required.
The decision about highway winter maintenance requirements is based on weather data provided by the Meteorology Office. Prevailing weather conditions are also taken into account.
The council produces a new maintenance plan each year and the council's consulting engineers (Mouchel) are responsible for implementing the gritting plan. The plan sets out the gritting treatment of the borough's priority routes for main roads.
The current winter maintenance plan is in operation between 1 November 2009 and 30 April 2010.
The council's contractor receives a winter weather service forecast from the Met Office which consists of four daily notifications. The winter plan and actions to grit is based on the information received from the Met Office.
Priorities
There is priority for:
- all main roads
- important bus routes
- important commuter routes
- town centres
- schools
- roads leading to hospitals, ambulance stations and fire stations
Precautions
Residents are advised to:
- never assume roads and pavements have been gritted
- take extreme care when walking or driving on the roads in winter conditions
- residential streets are not gritted unless they fall into any of the above priorities, eg bus route
