The Olympic Torch Relay is coming to Ealing

Published 18 July 2012

Ealing is preparing to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay when it makes its historic journey through the borough on Tuesday 24 July.

The flame arrives at Northala Fields, Northolt

As well as hosting a ticket-only evening party in Walpole Park , Ealing Council has arranged for a giant screen to be set so that people without tickets will be able to watch the action from the stage.

The screen will be in a different part of the park and although no tickets are required to get into the area capacity is limited.

Gates to Walpole Park will open at 4pm. Music, dance and other performances will begin at 5.30pm. The Olympic Torch will arrive at approximately 6.50pm and the event is due to finish at approximately 7.30pm.

Eight thousand free tickets to the party were allocated to residents who applied via the council’s website and telephone in May.

Large crowds are expected to line the Torch Relay route from Northala Fields, towards Southall and along Uxbridge Road through Hanwell, West Ealing and on to Ealing Green before reaching Walpole Park .

Among those carrying the Torch will be football-loving Brentside High School pupil, Sydney Richards and Southall charity worker and volunteer, Tom Thacker. They were selected as Ealing Council’s two torchbearers from dozens of nominations.

Leader of Ealing Council, Councillor Julian Bell said: “This is going to be a once in a life-time opportunity to see the Olympic Torch travel through Ealing and I hope that people will get into the Olympic spirit to cheer it on.

“The celebration event in Walpole Park also promises to be a night to remember so it’s great that anyone who may have been disappointed that they did not get tickets will be able to watch the action on screen.”

Anyone planning to see the relay in Ealing is advised to get to their chosen viewing spot around an hour before it is expected to arrive and wear appropriate footwear. Public car parks will be open but there may be increased demand for spaces and where possible people should use public transport.

Parking and loading restrictions will be in operation along the route from 8am until the evening of Tuesday 24 July. Information about the relay, including details of timings and parking restrictions is now available on our Olympics pages.
