Ealing Council is planting a tree to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January 2012.
The event is held annually to remember all those around the world who lost their lives as a result of acts of genocide.
Ealings Mayor, Councillor John Gallagher and Leader of the Council, Councillor Julian Bell will plant a memorial tree outside its Perceval House offices at 11am, followed by a minutes silence. The tree planting ceremony is open to all members of the public.
Holocaust Memorial Day marks the 67th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp in south-west Poland. The tree will be planted in remembrance of all the victims of the Nazi Holocaust and all other victims of persecution and torture around the world, including those in Armenia, Assyria, Cambodia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sri Lanka, Rwanda and Darfur. In 2010 the council passed a resolution to recognise the 1915 genocide of one and a half million Armenians.
Councillor Bell, said: Ealing is a vibrant and diverse borough with strong community cohesion and we will not tolerate persecution. Holocaust Memorial Day helps to ensure that these terrible atrocities are never forgotten and gives us the chance to think about the part we can all play in standing up to discrimination.
