Changing a child's forename

Changing a child's forename must be completed within 12 months of the original registration. Parents are able to add, replace, change or re-order a child’s forenames. You are unable to change the child’s surname using this process.

You can change a child’s forename in the following circumstances:

  • new forenames were given in baptism or by regular use within 12 months of the birth being registered
  • if your child has been baptised

To apply to change the child's forename, go to the Directgov website where you can get the necessary application forms and information you need.

The original name given at the time of registration will still be shown on any birth certificates. The change would be shown at the bottom of the certificate (in space 17).
