Facility improvement projects
In addition to developing projects that will improve or replace existing community sports facilities, Active Ealing is also working with a range of partners to provide new venues to help people lead a more active lifestyle. Here are some of the projects:
Swift Road Outdoor Sports Centre
This project will provide an important new sports facility
for the Southall area. Funded by Ealing Council, the Football
Foundation, London Marathon Charitable Trust and Safer Ealing
Partnership, the full-size artificial turf pitch and multi-use
games areas will be used by schools and the community. The
centre is due to open by Summer 2007.
Dormers Wells Leisure Centre
The swimming pool will have two new changing rooms and the
existing pool changing rooms will be fully refurbished to benefit
both school and community users. The work is being funded by the
Big Lottery Fund through the New Opportunities
for PE and Sport programme. It is due to be completed by
summer 2007.
Perivale Park Athletics Track
Work on a new purpose-built pavilion is complete. This
will provide a base for an enhanced programme of coaching activity
as well as a home for the award-winning West London Hammer School,
Ealing Southall and Middlesex Athletics Club and Perivale Panthers.
This project was funded by Ealing Council, the Big Lottery Fund and
London Marathon Charitable Trust.
Hanwell School of Boxing
Active Ealing are working on a project to provide a new home
for Hanwell Boxing Club at Boston Manor. The club will move in from
February 2007.
Gurnell Leisure Centre
Developments will see a complete transformation of the first
floor areas and wet change facility. Part of the first floor
will be developed into a state of the art 100-station fitness
centre with dedicated male and female dry-side changing
rooms. The front of house and reception area will be
re-configured and enhanced to improve access for all users. A
new café and seating area will be included in a new location within
the first floor. The studio will be refurbished and
maintenance works completed to the flooring.
The refurbishment to all areas of the wet changing room facility will include showers, toilets and change area. The health suite will also be upgraded with new facilities.
Acton Swimming Baths
A refurbishment of the health suite at Acton swimming Baths
is planned during 2007.
Reynolds Sports Centre
As part of the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) project to
rebuild Acton High School,
Reynolds Sports Centre will also be replaced.
The new centre will open on 4 June 2007 and will include a new
sports hall, larger gym, and a small hall for aerobics and other
classes.
Greenford Sports Centre
This project has also been developed as part of the PFI
scheme. Like the Reynolds project there will be a new sports hall,
larger gym and small hall for other activities. The new centre is
due to open by September 2008.
Long-term plans:
There is a number of long-term project plans including:
A new pool for Northolt
A detailed feasibility study for plans to replace Northolt
Swimarama has now been completed. As well as a new, larger swimming
pool, it is proposed that the centre will offer an improved fitness
gym, dance studio, community meeting rooms, library services and a
Metropolitan Police Safer Neighbourhoods base. Work is due to
commence on the new facilities by the end of 2007.
A 50m pool in Acton
We are investigating the feasibility of a new 50m pool and
other sports facilities close to Acton Town Underground Station.
The flexible facility would support the continued development of
Acton and Ealing Swimming Clubs and provide a modern facility for
community use. Active Ealing will consult with stakeholders and
provide progress updates over the year.
Active Ealing produced a swimming pool strategy in 2005, which is currently being updated. This aims to replace outdated facilities and increase uptake of swimming and water sport.
