| The pots on exhibition by pupils from Mandeville School | ||
The artwork for this exhibition was made as a result of a cross-curricular art and history project by children aged 7-11 at Mandeville School.
The children were encouraged to look at, touch and respond to different containers from Victorian times. They looked at the shape, material, texture, decoration and function of each pot.
The children took photos and painted in the outlines of different containers to help to focus on each one and distinguish between them.
Groups of children then experimented with plaster and wire, moulding and constructing to make a large container.
The children made good responses to the sculpture and decorating processes. A few children from each group were able to work using plaster on wire with few prompts. Many children needed support but were engaged by the repetitious nature of the process, and counted with an adult as they soaked the bandages and placed them on wire. Other children enjoyed feeling the materials and experimenting with squeezing the plaster and dipping in the water, while others enjoyed applying paint with their hands onto dry hard plaster. Children in one class coped with taking it in turn to paint a pattern on their pot..
Mandeville is a school for pupils with severe learning difficulties and who may have additional physical, medical and/or sensory disabilities or autism. Pupils are given opportunities to access the national curriculum for art, and to respond to pupils' individual learning styles through the use of a variety of learning methods.
