Former Rough Guide editor Fran Sandham talks about his book Traversa, an account of his solo 3,000 mile trek across Africa from the Skeleton Coast to the Indian Ocean at Zanzibar.  The first time in history anyone has crossed Africa solo entirely on foot by this route (solo apart from an obstinate donkey).

“A lively and engaging speaker whose journey on foot across Africa needs to be heard to be believed.” BBC London Radio.
“A likeable and self-deprecating narrator, ….I found myself increasingly gripped” Observer

After Nelson’s death she lost all her money and died in penury. Drawing on her five years of research in archives across the world, Dr Williams reveals Emma’s astonishing story.

1908 White City Olympics
Wednesday 17 September 6.30pm, Central Library

A talk by Jane Kimber
The Olympics came to West London in 1908, only the fourth to be held since classical times. The UK won 56 gold medals, but had provided all the officials. Rivalry with the USA led to acrimonious disputes, including a controversy over the marathon, where the winner was disqualified as he had been helped across the finishing line.

This talk reveals the full story of the first London Olympics, its dramas, achievements and ultimate success.
Tickets £4 from Central Library, Tel: (020) 8567 3670
