100 years of Black Journalism

A talk by Lionel Morrison
The first Black president of the NUJ talks about the history of Black journalists and the Black press in Britain. Lionel Morrison is the author of A Century of Black Journalism – a kaleidoscopic view of race and the media 1893-2003

The Art of Color

Writer and artist Raimi Gbadamosi discusses his reworking of Johannes Itten’s classic text for artists. 

Tracing your Caribbean Roots
Saturday 25 October 2.30pm, Central Library
A talk by Guy Grannum, author of Tracing Your West Indian Ancestors, followed by question and answer session . The talk is a general introduction to Caribbean genealogy aimed predominantly at new researchers. Windrush 60
Wednesday 29 October 6.30pm, Central Library
Marking the 60th anniversary of the arrival of SS Empire Windrush, Trinidadian Calypso singer/songwriter Alexander D’Great presents Windrush 60, an evening of storytelling and Calypso song, taking the audience on a Caribbean journey of the last 60 years. As well as a new workforce, Britain also gained access to a new culture of Caribbean literature, food, music and fashion.

Composer Sir Hubert Parry

Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry 1848-1918: Personal reflections.
An illustrated talk given by the composer’s great grand-daughter Lady Laura Ponsonby. Hubert Parry was probably best known for his setting of Blake’s poem, Jerusalem, the coronation anthem I was glad and the hymn tune Repton set to Dear Lord and Father of Mankind.

Hajj and Umrah

An evening to explore and discuss practical issues and problems and their solution during performing Hajj and Umrah, with a talk by Muhammad A. Hassan, author of "Guide for Hajj and Umrah", who has completed 5 Hajj and Umrah, followed with a question and answer session in Urdu or English. The Hajj is the Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah, and Umrah is an Islamic act of worship.

Sandra Hempel
Tuesday 25 November 6.30pm, Central Library
Sandra Hempel talks about her award-winning book, The Medical  Detective. Written in the style of a Victorian thriller and based on first-hand accounts, it tells the story of the fight against the deadly disease cholera, which swept across Britain in the 19th century. John Snow, a reclusive doctor, worked out how the disease was spreading and how to prevent it, but his ideas were so revolutionary for his time that he was ridiculed and 100,000 people died.

Catherine Johnson

Catherine Johnson is a novelist and screenwriter. She has written eleven novels for young adults including Stella, Landlocked and Face Value.
