Sheltered housing to rent

Flats are unfurnished and are rented the same way as other council housing. The exception is that you do not have the right to buy you flat.

Sheltered housing should not be confused with special sheltered housing or supported housing which cater for the needs of people with learning difficulties or mental illness. Sheltered housing schemes are not 'old peoples homes'.

By providing sheltered housing we aim to provide an alternative for older people. This gives you the opportunity to live in a community of people from a similar age group while retaining independence.

Sheltered housing is aimed at older people who are independent and able to manage alone for most of the time but prefer the added security of a community housing officer (CHO) and an alarm call system. Community housing officers visit residents of sheltered housing every working day, as required, to ascertain their welfare and to see if there are matters in which they could provide support or advice. Residents of sheltered housing should usually be independent and capable of undertaking most of their own household activities.

Sheltered housing is a positive option for older people. It should not be seen as the answer to all the difficulties that elderly people might experience. It cannot solve all the problems of isolation and loneliness, particularly if this is caused by a wish not to mix socially. Most importantly, it should not be seen as a solution to the problems of other people such as relatives or neighbours.
