Handyperson scheme
The council’s home improvement agency (including its partnership
with Age Concern Ealing) administers this scheme and will assist
with all aspects of the grant process. To qualify for assistance
the client must meet one (or more) of the following criteria:
a) be aged 60 or over and not in paid employment
b) be disabled or infirm
c) be a single parent in receipt of an income-related
benefit with child(ren) under 16
The following conditions/limitations apply:

total duration of work not to exceed six hours in any one
year
-
each visit restricted to two hours (including travelling
time one way)
-
clients must agree to a council officer (or partner
organisation) carrying out a brief survey to identify what work
is necessary
-
all materials (other than fixings and smoke/carbon
monoxide detectors) to be supplied or paid for by the
client
-
grant is limited to £500
-
clients must have the power or duty to carry out the
works
Typical works which may attract grant aid include the
following:
-
replacing lightbulbs
-
setting thermostats/timers
-
fitting smoke/carbon monoxide alarms
-
unblocking sinks/basins/baths/WCs
-
putting up curtains/tracks
-
fixing down hazardous carpets, trailing electrical leads
etc
-
moving furniture around within the property (provided it
can be done by one person)
-
replacing: WC seats, small areas of tiling, sealant around
bath/sink
-
fitting grab rails, plugs and fuses
-
security and energy efficiency advice
-
initial help following hospital discharge (eg resetting
heating controls etc.)
-
minor repairs to paths (to eliminate trip hazards), gates
and fences
