Frequently asked questions

Pruning

Every year thousands of council trees are inspected as part of a pruning schedule and, if required, programmed for maintenance.  Pruning is carried out on a three year rolling program.

The Tree Service does not carry out private work for residents, but a list of approved contractors (word) is available.

Trees may be protected under planning law by a tree preservation order or if a property is within a conservation area . The council's permission is required before any works like pruning, removal or disruption to the roots.  To check if your tree/s are protected contact the planning department, tel: (020) 8825 6600.

Basal growth
Growth at the base and stem of trees is called 'basal growth'.  As part of a basal growth programme 10-11,000 trees are pruned each summer.
