Low carbon buildings programme
The Department of Trade and Industry's low carbon buildings programme provides grants for individual buildings or communities, known as microgeneration technologies, for householders, community organisations, schools, the public sector and businesses. The programme is managed by the Energy Saving Trust.
Grants are available for the following technologies:

solar photovoltaics (PV) which uses energy from the sun to create electricity to run appliances and lighting. It only requires daylight - not direct sunlight - to generate electricity.

wind turbines

small hydro power systems which convert potential energy stored in water held at height to kinetic energy (or the energy used in movement) to turn a turbine to produce electricity.

solar thermal hot water

ground source heat pumps

water/air source heat pumps

using bio-energy (organic matter of recent origin as fuel)

renewable combined heat and power (CHP)

micro CHP (can be installed in place of standard domestic boilers)

fuel cells (combine hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, with water and heat as its by-product)
