Applying for a primary school place

It is very important that you look at each school’s admissions criteria so that you know how places are allocated at oversubscribed schools. Each year parents are disappointed because they apply to schools where they are unlikely to be offered a place because they do not meet the key admissions criteria*
Some schools get many more applications than there are places available, so you should check the school statistics table (pdf), and compare the number of applications received last year with the number of places available and ask the headteacher about the pattern of admissions in previous years.
You will then be in a better position to judge if you are likely to meet the admission criteria or whether other applicants are likely to have a stronger claim.
* ie - distance from home to school or religious requirements for voluntary-aided schools
