Statement of special educational needs
Children with statements of special educational
needs naming a school in the statement are required to be admitted
to that school.
If your child has a statement of special educational needs, you are asked to note this in the relevant section of the application form. In that case, your application will not be dealt with under the admissions criteria. Your named special education officer will write to you with further details of the admissions procedure for children with statements of special educational needs.
He/she will progress your application in accordance with the Education Act 1996 and the Government’s Code of Practice on the identification and assessment of special educational needs.
If your child has a statement and you wish to apply to a voluntary aided school, you must also complete the school’s additional information form which is required to assess denominational commitment and return it to the school.
Special education provision
Parents who believe their child may have special educational
needs should seek advice and guidance from their child’s teacher or
headteacher.
It may be necessary to assess a child’s needs to determine whether additional special help should be made available. Parents are involved at all stages of this process. The majority of children with special educational needs will have their needs met by their school. The authority and schools are guided by the government’s Code of Practice on the Identification and Assessment of Special Educational Needs.
The code and an accompanying guide for parents may be obtained free of charge from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), Publications Centre (Tel: 0845 602 2260).
For a small number of children a specialist facility is required to meet the child’s needs. Ealing has a range of schools and units which cater for children with severe and moderate learning difficulties, severe speech and language difficulties, complex social communication difficulties including autistic spectrum disorder, hearing difficulties and physical disabilities.
Ealing’s special educational needs policy has adopted the principle of high quality local provision with the intention that more distant provision will only be used in exceptional circumstances.
This information forms part of Ealing's 2009 admission policy.
