Safer communities

Ealing had one of the fastest reductions in overall crime compared to the rest of London last year (2007).
To help achieve this we supported the police with a range of our services.

We have spent £1 million on 50 extra Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) to go on the beat, and have installed CCTV cameras in all our town centres to catch criminals in the act.

Our community safety team is working with you on small but highly effective schemes to stamp out crime and anti-social behaviour in your neighbourhood.

You told us you want to live in safer communities. Your safety is a priority for us too, and we’re working hard to make this happen.

In 2007 our borough saw the fastest dropping crime rate in London. This was attributed to our various targeted investments:

2,671 new street lights were put up around the borough.
We pumped an extra £1million into funding 50 new Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) to patrol your streets. Ealing also got an additional 18 transport PCSOs to work on buses and the London Underground.
We invested £120,000 to pay for four new officers to deal specifically with anti-social behaviour.
We spent £500,000 on 23 new CCTV cameras (on top of the £750,000 we set aside in September 2006 to spend).

What to expect in 2008/2009

We will spend £300,000 on new alley gating and on securing the locks on vulnerable people’s doors and windows, on top of the £250,000 we have spent in the past 12 months.
We will continue making low-level offenders pay for their crime through forms of community service like clean-up projects – via our successful Community Payback and Young Offenders Payback schemes.
With the help of our partners we will establish a Specialist Domestic Violence Court to deal specifically with domestic violence cases.
Our weekly Partnership Taskforce Day events will continue to blitz crime hot-spot areas.
