Mayor's frequently asked questions

How is the Mayor chosen?

How do I invite the Mayor to a function?
The Mayor attends hundreds of engagements every year, so all invitations are kindly requested to be sent at the earliest opportunity as the Mayor's diary fills up quickly. If the Mayor is unable to attend then Deputy Mayor may attend in their absence.

Invitations can be sent by post to:
The Mayor’s Office
Ealing Town Hall,
New Broadway
W5 2BY

Or by E-mail to: mayor@ealing.gov.uk, or by facsimile to: (020) 8825 8720

Once your engagement has been accepted you will receive written confirmation of this from the Mayor’s secretary, along with a form on which we will ask you for further details of the engagement. This form should be returned as soon as possible to the Mayor's office.

What is the correct way to address the Mayor?
The correct title is 'The Worshipful the Mayor of the London Borough of Ealing' and the correct form of address is 'Your Worship' or 'Mister Mayor'. The Mayoress is addressed as 'Mayoress'. Jointly they should be addressed as 'The Worshipful the Mayor and Mayoress of the London Borough of Ealing'.

The Mayor is First Citizen of the Borough – what does this mean?
By law the Mayor has precedence in all places in the borough except when the sovereign or the sovereign’s representative is present. This is the highest office that the citizens of a borough, through their elected representatives, can confer.

Why do we have a Mayor?
The ancient office of Mayor dates back to the days when Mayors had much wider authority and power than they do nowadays. The position today is a civic role and will represent the Borough at ceremonial and civic events. The Mayor is also required to receive members of the Royal Family during official visits the Borough. The Mayor is apolitical and is expected to maintain this impartiality, even when taking the chair at council meetings.

How long des the Mayor stay in office?
The Mayor stays in office for one year.
