Businesses and other non-domestic property occupiers pay non-domestic rates (also known as business rates) to contribute towards the costs of local authority services. Business rates are calculated by multiplying the rateable value of the property by the national poundage (known as the multiplier), which is set by the government each year. All business property has a rateable value unless it is specifically exempt from rates.
