Car sellers scheme
About the scheme
Available to car sellers in the borough who aim to
improve their image by encouraging businesses to trade fairly and
resolve complaints. By demonstrating a commitment to fair trading,
consumers may be more willing to buy cars from scheme members and
the logo may be used on premises and in advertising. However,
trading standards cannot approve businesses and it will remain the
buyer's responsibility to compare prices and ensure they are
getting value for money.
Which services do trading standards offer?
• a fair and impartial service to consumers and businesses
• an information pack on relevant civil and criminal law for
scheme members
• advice on queries relating to trading standards law, upon
request
• advertising of the scheme and making the list of
members available to the public
Membership, advertising and complaints
• membership is renewable annually - current rates available
from trading standards
• applicants will be subject to a three month probationary
period and upon satisfactory completion the logo may be used on
business documentation and local advertising (but not long term
publications such as Thompson or Yellow Pages)
• if the business does not comply with the terms and
conditions membership may be revoked
• consumer complaints against a member should be made to the
appropriate person within the business. If it is not dealt with
appropriately notify trading standards.
Terms and conditions
• an assurance member must comply with consumer
protection law
• displaying the appropriate trading standards leaflets
• displaying the name of the appropriate person to deal with
consumer complaints
• maintaining adequate records and documentation
• all descriptions (including odometers) must
be legal and truthful
• all vehicles over three years old must be sold with a
current MOT and must be roadworthy
• consumers' rights are not restricted
• co-operating with trading standards officers
• complying with legal requirements issued by other council
departments.
