Employing people

The council is committed to attracting new jobs to the area and works in partnership with other agencies to ensure residents benefit from employment opportunities created. For more information on jobs and skills initiatives in an area contact the relevant area regeneration partnership.

Your local job centre can also give recruitment advice and will advertise positions in the local centres free of charge.

If you employ anyone, you are required to have employers’ liability insurance and to display the certificate ( Employers’ Liability Compulsory Insurance Act 1969, pdf).

You also need to display a health and safety law poster (Health and Safety Regulations, 1996; Safety Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations, 1977). Alternatively, you can provide your employees with individual copies of the same information in leaflet form. For more information, please visit the Health and Safety Executive website.

Criminal records checking service
As a registered body with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) the council can carry out criminal records checks on behalf of non-registered organisations – this is called an umbrella service.
