Recycle, reduce re-use…remarkable! (PR 1294)

Ealing’s residents are making remarkable efforts to recycle, reduce and re-use as the latest figures reveal recycling rates in the borough are exceptionally high.

Since the launch of Ealing Council’s new multi-million pound waste and recycling services in November 2007 the amount of recycling tonnage has soared. Last month residents recycled 3,494 tonnes of waste, the equivalent to 129 jumbo jets, up 6.2 per cent year-on-year.

A total of 877 tonnes of plastics has also been collected since the Council began plastics recycling as part of its £3.8million investment in the service. The improvements included refuse and recycling collections taking place on the same day, as well as the provision of reusable sacks for garden waste, which is now collected every week.

The amount of garden waste collected has rocketed over the last year, with 5,293 tonnes collected since last November compared to 2,206 tonnes between November 2006 and August 2007.

Councillor Sue Emment, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Services, said: “This is astounding news and really goes to show that the investment made in these services was money well spent. Residents clearly want to make a difference to the environment and have really done a fantastic job. Everyone should proud of what they have achieved. Now we need to look at how this can be improved even further.”
