Lottery cash for library revamp (PR 1278)

Refurbishment work to revamp Northolt Library as part of a £1.5 million facelift will soon be underway.

The library, in Church Road, closes on 11 October and a much-improved facility will open in June 2009. A temporary library will be open during the refurbishment in front of the existing building.

The £1,279,273 funding boost comes from the Big Lottery Fund’s Community Libraries programme, and Ealing Council is also investing £300,000 to turn the library into a modern and accessible centre for the community.

In addition to the traditional library services, the new centre will offer a  programme of wider learning and support, such as parenting skills and career advice. There will also be a crèche facility to enable lone parents in particular to take full advantage of the community learning opportunities, and a café area for people to enjoy.

Councillor Phil Taylor, Cabinet Member for Customer and Community Services, said: “The refurbishment will transform Northolt Library and make a real difference to people. The library will be developed as a centre for community learning, leisure and support and I’m confident we will see lots of new faces using the facilities.”

Bisset Adams, the architects that designed the recently reopened Ealing Central Library, have been drawing up plans and the contract for the building work is out to tender.

Jubilee Gardens Library, in Southall, has also now closed for redevelopment and a temporary library is open in the health centre opposite the library. The new facility will combine a library and health centre, as part of a joint initiative between Ealing Council and the Ealing Primary Care Trust. It is due to open by January 2010.
