Councillors review London’s NHS (PR 1221)

Residents are invited to find out what councillors across London and the south-east think should be done to improve the NHS.

The Joint Overview and Scrutiny Committee (JOSC), which is the biggest London has ever seen, has now responded to NHS London's report 'Healthcare for London: Consulting the Capital'.

The report, based on a review by Lord Ara Darzi, sets out plans to change the way health services are provided for Londoners. This could mean a new look for local hospitals and the creation of polyclinics, which will allow people to see a range of different health care specialists under one roof.

Councillor Mark Reen, Cabinet Member for Adult Services and Health, said: “The committee has now published its report, which agrees with Lord Darzi’s vision that health services need to change and the NHS must deliver a first class service. The NHS can be commended in a number of areas, but many parts of it still need much more work before they can become a reality.”

The committee will meet again in the autumn to discuss the NHS response to the report and look at how the NHS intends to make its improvements. This includes the need for a better balance of funding between health and social care, and to further consider the challenges involved in moving medicine into a more community-based setting.
