Golden chance for Ealing tenants (PR 1243)

Ealing Council’s best behaved tenants could benefit from a new scheme to make it easier for them to move home.

The Golden Transfer Scheme, which was approved by the Council’s Cabinet last night, will give those with a good tenancy record a much better chance of being able to transfer to a new home when they apply.

Because of the shortage of housing available, tenants who aren’t assessed as having a housing need are unlikely to be successful if they apply for a move.  The new scheme means 10 per cent of available housing will be opened up for tenants who pay their rent on time, stick to their tenancy agreements and have no record of anti-social behaviour.

The scheme will be introduced on a pilot basis and reviewed after six months to ensure it’s successful and has a positive impact on the lives of tenants.

Cabinet Member for Housing, Councillor Will Brooks, said: “At the moment we have tenants who want to move for very good reasons, such as because their family has grown or they’ve moved jobs, but because they’re not assessed as having a great housing need they could be waiting years.  The new Golden Transfer Scheme will be much fairer and will also give people an added incentive to act as responsible tenants and good neighbours.”

The Cabinet also made changes to the allocation scheme to make it easier for tenants to move from homes while the Council drives forward plans for renewing and regenerating estates.

The Cabinet decision is subject to call-in for a period of five working days from the date of publication of the minutes of the meeting.
