Council Leader keeps an eye on street cleaning (PR 1239)

Ealing Council leader Jason Stacey has told contractor ECT to raise its game and make improvements to clean up a number of streets in Central Acton.

The call follows his unannounced visit to the area on Friday 20 June,  as part of his reality checks initiative to ensure the borough’s streets are kept clean.

Councillor Stacey also carried out a reality check in Greenford Broadway earlier the same week where he felt standards of cleanliness were generally good.

Staff accompanying Councillor Stacey on his tour of Central Acton included Council envirocrime officers and staff from street cleaning contractors ECT.

Among the roads that needed more attention were Essex Road, Julian Avenue, Shalimar Gardens, Hereford Road and the Western Avenue. Other roads visited during the inspection faired much better, with most either exceeding or meeting acceptable standards. They included: Emanuel Avenue, Friary Road, Grafton Road, Horn Lane and Messaline Avenue.

Councillor Stacey said: “Council staff and contractors are only told of the location of the reality check one hour before the inspection, this means we get an accurate view of what the streets are like.

“This really was a reality check of two halves, part good and part bad. The area around Essex Road, Hereford Road, Julian Gardens was poor and did not meet the standard that the Council or residents would expect.

“I’ve told ECT to raise its game in these roads and that I would be personally going back to check progress is made.

“On a positive note, I’m really pleased about the reduction of graffiti across the borough.”

The checks help Councillor Stacey personally ensure the Council’s three priorities - cleaner streets, safer communities and value for money public services - are all being fulfilled.
