The Green - made greener (PR 1229)

Ealing Council officers took to the streets of Southall this week in a bid to make it greener, safer and cleaner.

Council officers spoke to more than 200 residents in The Green area about recycling, anti-social behaviour and personal safety, as part of the 100-day Capital Clean Up Campaign.

Officers carried out spot checks on waste carrier vehicles, monitored noise levels and removed two abandoned cars as part of the drive to make Ealing safer.

Results on the day included:
· More than 200 people received crime prevention advice
· 160 people were given free cigarette and chewing gum pouches
· 40 people received recycling advice and information
· 30 commercial premises were visited as part of Business Watch
· 22 young people were advised about the harm caused by drugs and alcohol.

Councillor Sue Emment, Cabinet member for Environment and Street Services said: “Cleaner streets is one of the Council’s top priorities. It’s great to see our officers working hard to encourage residents to keep the borough clean and take pride in where they live.”

Councillor Vlod Barchuk, Cabinet member for Safer Communities, said:  “Council officers were able to offer advice to residents on the day and help them book home visits with PCSOs and the fire service to make their homes safer.  Events such as this one give us the chance to speak to residents about their concerns and respond to their needs quickly.”

The Capital Clean Up Campaign, which is led by environmental charity Capital Standards, runs until 18 June.
