Ealing residents are being reminded to watch out for signs that their elderly friends and relatives are being abused.
To mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, on Sunday, 15 June, Ealing Council is holding an event at Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre to encourage people to think about the problem and be on the look out for tell tale signs.
Although elder abuse is often hidden and difficult to detect, last year more than 300 incidents were reported to the Council’s Adult Services Department. Cases included neglect and physical abuse, as well as examples of older people being duped out of money.
Experts will be on hand at the stand outside Tesco from 11am to 4pm to answer questions about the problem and give out literature.
Signs that an older person could be being abused include:
Councillor Mark Reen, Cabinet Member for Adult Services and Health, said: “People sometimes become more vulnerable as they get older and it’s a sad fact that there are people who take advantage of them. There are also undoubtedly cases where a carer or family member simply can’t cope and may need help. That’s why it’s really important that if anyone has any suspicions, they report them straight away.
“This event is intended to make people more aware of the problem of elder abuse and is part of our drive to make Ealing safer.”
Anyone who is concerned about an elderly friend, relative or neighbour should contact Ealing Adult Services on (020) 8825 8000.
