Streetwatcher project tipped for national award (PR 1148)

Ealing Council is in the running to win a prestigious national award for an innovative scheme to tackle fly-tipping and keep the borough safe and clean.

Ealing has made the finals at the Cleaner, Safer, Greener Awards 2008 for its Streewatcher project, where residents volunteer as the eyes and ears of the borough to help tackle Envirocrime issues. The Council is one of three finalists in the Engaging Communities category.

There are 341 Streetwatchers across the borough, who help the Council to quickly identify and tackle Envirocrime issues and reduce the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour. There are also 261 Junior Streetwatchers, aged 8-10 years old, who are trained to identify and report Envirocrime issues such as graffiti and fly-tipping.

The awards are held by environmental charity ENCAMS, the organisation that monitors cleanliness levels for authorities across the UK. Winners will be announced in March.

Councillor Will Brooks, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Services, said: “It is fantastic that we have been recognised for this scheme. Our residents care passionately about their local environment and have made a clear commitment to making the borough a better place to live.

“Engaging local people is vital to create strong communities.  The Streetwatchers initiative is helping to make our communities cleaner, safer and greener.”
