Shopkeeper hauled to court for dumping waste (pr 1178)

A trader has been fined £1,500 for repeatedly dumping rubbish in the street outside his own shop, following an Ealing Council investigation.

Sanjay Hirani, who owns Super Shop on The Broadway, Ealing, pleaded guilty to five waste related offences, and was fined £300 for each, at Acton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 21 February. He was also ordered to pay £2,141 court costs.

Workers were spotted on a number of occasions coming out of the shop, a small kiosk between Robert Dyas and Snappy Snaps, and dumping cardboard and sacks of rubbish in or near to the public bins. They were caught twice on CCTV.

Businesses must be able to show that they dispose of their waste correctly. A licensed company can be contracted to do this or the trader must be able to produce waste transfer notes to prove an authorised person has disposed of the waste.

Hirani had made no effort to ensure he met the legal requirements for disposing of his commercial waste. He had initially claimed to have a waste agreement with the Council, but this was untrue.

Councillor Will Brooks, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Services, said: "This is a real victory, our officers spent a lot of time and effort in collecting the evidence to make this prosecution so successful.

"The Council is launching a fly-tipping awareness campaign to try and prevent people from dumping rubbish in the first place. We will make sure they are prosecuted if they ignore our warnings."

Hirani has now joined a Council scheme so his waste is disposed of correctly.
