Youth and leisure services on budget agenda (PR 1171)

Plans are underway to plough £2million into the borough’s youth and leisure services and improve Ealing’s parks and open spaces.

Ealing Council’s budget proposals for 2008/9 include £1million to be spent on developing existing facilities for young people and creating new ones.

A further £1million is being set aside to improve the borough’s parks, which includes £555,000 to refurbish eight playgrounds and £400,000 for general park improvements such as new litter bins, benches and path surfacing. This is on top of £300,000 to improve facilities in Walpole and Lammas Parks, which was recently announced as part of the Council’s plans for a Heritage Quarter.

An additional £50,000 will go towards upgrading the multi-use games pitches at Elthorne Sports Centre. This means a range of other sports and activities can be enjoyed.

Councillor Ian Gibb, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “We will be consulting residents on the plans, and in particular we will be looking forward to hearing from the young people who will benefit directly from the improvements.

“We want to involve the community in how the money is best spent so they can enjoy the end results even more.”

The budget proposals are due to be discussed and formally agreed at a meeting of the Council on 4 March.
