Green Sweep (PR 1050)

Thousands of residents are stepping up their recycling efforts following a campaign by Ealing Council.

A 20-strong green taskforce, employed by Waste Watch on behalf of the Council, recently visited more than 80,000 homes in a bid to educate residents and increase recycling levels across the borough.

The doorknockers have taken orders for more than 5,000 food waste bins and more than 5,000 green boxes over the last three months.

Councillor Will Brooks, Cabinet Member for Environment & Street Services, said: “We are trying to make recycling as easy as possible for people and reduce the amount of rubbish that ends up going into landfill sites.

“As a result of this operation residents should now be more aware about what they can recycle, and it’s great that so many are willing to do their bit for the environment.”

As part of the Council’s plans to improve street cleanliness it has invested £3.8 million in making a number of improvements to refuse and recycling services.

New services due to be rolled out from 19 November include:

To find out more about recycling, or to order a food waste bin or green box call Customer Services on 020 8825 6000.

Ealing Council’s other priorities are safer communities and value for money services.
