Wheelie good news for Southall residents (PR 1092)

Residents in parts of Southall can expect a special delivery next week as Ealing Council starts to distribute brand new wheelie bins to nearly 15,000 homes.

The free bins, which are being introduced as part of the Council's £3.8million revamp of waste and recycling services, are only being rolled out in the Southall area.  Other key changes, including new weekly collections for waste and recycling, will take effect on 19 November as part of the Council’s drive to improve street cleanliness.

Last year 29,000 people made their views known in the Council’s 'How to bin it' consultation. Six of the borough’s seven areas decided to keep black sacks, while parts of Southall opted for wheelie bins.

The standard 240 litre wheelie holds approximately three to four full black sacks.  All rubbish must be inside the bin and the lid shut.  Extra rubbish sacks put on top or by the side of the bin won't be collected.   The wheelie bins are only for refuse.  Residents will continue to have a separate green box and food bin for recycling.

The bins have to be emptied using a special refuse truck so residents can’t start using their new bins until November 19, when the new lorries come into service.  Until then residents should continue to use black sacks.

Large families who want an additional wheelie bin will be visited to ensure that they are using recycling services fully.  Smaller 180 litre bins are availble upon request.

Residents must leave bins at the boundary of their property on collection day, but not on the street.  People who are physically unable to move their bin to the front of their property can call the Council on 020 8825 6000 to request an assisted collection.

Some homes in the wheelie bin area can’t have wheelie bins because they don’t have any frontage – they include terrace homes that open straight onto the street and flats.  Those people will continue to receive a black sack collection.
