Northolt Swimarama to be rebuilt (PR 1081)

Work will begin to replace Northolt Swimarama with a state-of-the-art facility at the end of the month.

The leisure centre will close on October 31 and demolition work will begin next month.  It is due to reopen at the beginning of 2010.

Ealing Council is investing significant funds towards the multimillion-pound project, which will feature:

· 8-lane 25-metre competition pool
· 12 x 16 metre learner pool
· dance studio
· gym with 120 - 140 fitness stations
· additional community hall for the Northolt area
· additional library for the Northolt area
· café with internet facilities

Until the newly rebuilt centre opens, leisure passes will be welcome in the three other Ealing borough pools; Gurnell Leisure Centre, Acton Swimming Baths and Dormers Wells Leisure Centre.

Councillor Nigel Sumner, Cabinet Member for Health and Community Well Being, said: “The Council is concerned about the obesity crisis facing the country but providing good sports facilities is part of our strategy in combatting the problem locally.

“While the closure will cause some inconvenience for residents, I am confident the borough’s other facilities will provide a suitable alternative while we wait for the new and improved centre to open. I would like to thank the public for their patience during the refurbishment period.”

Public swimming pools in Ealing are operated on behalf of the Council by Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL).
