Ealing Council has welcomed news that the Crossrail project is set to steam ahead after the scheme received financial backing from the government.
The project will provide a new high-speed rail link across London, from Berkshire to Essex and will stop at five stations in the borough - Southall, Hanwell, West Ealing, Ealing Broadway and Acton mainline.
Leader, Councillor Jason Stacey, said: “We’re pleased that the Crossrail project has now received the go ahead. It’s an important development for the borough and will help to ensure the area remains a desirable location for business and a great destination for shoppers and tourists.
“Ealing already has excellent transport links, but the scheme will provide even better connections between different areas in the borough and also make it much quicker for people to get to and from the centre of London and to Heathrow. Our challenge is to ensure that all areas of the Borough benefit from Crossrail and to integrate other public transport services to it.
“Bearing in mind the agreement I made with the Mayor of London on 2 August, I call on him to confirm that with this announcement the west London Tram is now officially dead.”
Construction of the Crossrail is due to begin in 2010, with the
first trains expected to start rolling from 2017.
