Annual cattle grazing at Horsenden Hill (PR 1104)

Ealing residents are being encouraged to visit the moo arrivals on show at Horsenden Hill before it’s time for them to moo-ve on.

Three calves who are only a few weeks old are part of a herd of British White-Gloucester cattle brought in to graze the land until the end of the month.  This is the third year Ealing Council has moo-ved cattle onto the hill to keep overgrown grass and bushes under control, as an alternative to using machinery.

A perfect opportunity to see the cows is during a two-hour tour led by Ealing Council’s Park Rangers on Sunday, 18 November. Visitors can also learn how humans have shaped the hill over thousands of years and why it is such an important wildlife habitat.  The tour begins at Horsenden Hill Visitor Centre, Horsenden Lane North, at 9.45am for a 10.00am start.

The cows were provided by the Hounslow Urban Farm, as part of Ealing Council’s grazing agreement with Hounslow Council’s leisure and cultural services.

The cattle are large and although generally docile the cows can be protective of the calves so they should not be approached or touched. All litter should be removed from the field, dogs must be on leads and gates must be closed.
