Pupils hip-hop back into school to produce inspirational song (PR 943)

Ten Southall pupils aged 6-11 have used the musical power of hip-hop to urge people of all backgrounds to live together in harmony.

The group returned to school during the half-term break last week to write, sing, mix and produce an impressive hip-hop song in just two days as part of a music production workshop.

The ‘Neighbourhood’ workshop was one of many half-term classes – including robotics, musical theatre, aerodynamics and yoga – organised and staged this week by schools in the south Southall area under Ealing Council’s Extended Schools programme.

Titled ‘Skinz’, the song deals with powerful themes including religion, racism and bullying. Its inspirational message urges people of diverse backgrounds to live side by side in harmony.

The pupils, who collectively call themselves the Lil Playaz, came together at Featherstone High School. The pupils attend a number of local schools including Havelock Primary, Dairy Meadow Primary, Featherstone Primary and Featherstone High School.

Councillor Ian Gibb, deputy leader and cabinet member for children’s services, said: “It is impressive to see children tackling such powerful messages and producing such an emotive song.

"This is the first time holiday activities like this have been organised across an Extended Schools partnership in Ealing borough and the programme was a great success.

“Across the many activities, the children had so much fun and learnt a lot.”
