Pupil jury calls on MP to be expert witness (PR 914)
Pupils will form a citizens’ jury to hear arguments for and against young people being given the right to vote at 16, when Bridget Prentice MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Department for Constitutional Affairs), visits Greenford High School tomorrow (30 January).
Ms Prentice will tour the school at 10am, before taking part in the citizens’ jury and being an expert government witness during questioning on the topic (from 10.30am). A question and answer session will follow around 11.30am.
Ms Prentice said: “A healthy democracy needs engagement from everyone, throughout the year - not just at election time.
“I want a democracy that provides equal opportunity and a voice for all. I am delighted to see schools like Greenford High encouraging participation in our democracy.”
Kate Griffin, Greenford High School head teacher, said: "The students at Greenford High School have been actively involved in many aspects of the school work and development.
“They interview candidates for teaching posts, observe lessons and most recently have engaged in a discussion about the new curriculum.
“They show a huge amount of maturity when given the opportunity
to participate in this way, and I am sure Bridget Prentice MP will
be encouraged by her visit."
