Bus lanes in Northolt and Yeading Lane will have their hours of operation radically reduced after Transport for London (TfL) agreed to Ealing Council proposals.
From 19 February bus lanes managed by the council will only operate during peak hours, Monday to Friday, and will no longer be in place on weekends.
The bus lanes affected are in Yeading Lane, the section of Church Road north of the A40, the adjoining Mandeville Road and Petts Hill.
The lanes are currently in affect from 7.00am to 7.00pm, seven days a week. The new hours of operation will be Monday to Friday 7.00am to 10.00am and 4.00pm to 7.00pm, cutting the total numbers of hours they are in place from 84 to 30 hours per week.
The changes are part of the council's experiment to evaluate whether the bus lanes cause congestion, as many local residents and motorists have suggested.
Council Leader Jason Stacey said: "I am pleased that TfL has raised no objections to this experiment going ahead. They have acknowledged that reducing the bus lane hours is unlikely to have a serious negative impact on how the roads operate.
"This is a good result for our long-suffering residents who have voiced their resentment about these bus lanes, but I would like to stress that this is only the first step. The council will continue to monitor the lanes with a view to suspending them completely if our studies show that this initial change in hours has had a positive impact on traffic flow."
The announcement was made at a meeting of the full council last night (Tuesday 23 January).
The council will repeat its detailed surveys in autumn.
