Holocaust Memorial Day will be marked in Ealing later this month, with a civic tree planting ceremony and an afternoon of reflection and discussion based around this year’s theme of “The Dignity of Difference”.
Ealing Council’s commemorations will start with a remembrance event on Monday 22 January at 2.30pm at Pitzhanger Manor-House, which will feature a number of keynote speakers.
Ealing’s former Mayor Joan Ansell will speak about her family’s role helping World War II refugees to settle in the UK and Ruth Barnett will talk about her experiences of travelling to the UK as a child on the kindertransport trains to escape Nazi persecution.
The council’s second event coincides with national commemorations. Ealing’s Mayor Cllr Diana Pagan and Leader of the Council, Cllr Jason Stacey will plant a memorial tree outside Perceval House at noon on Friday 26 January.
Cllr Stacey, said: “This day is so important to a number of Ealing residents, many of whom were directly affected by the Holocaust.
“It’s fitting that we take some time to stop and remember what so many people experienced during the Holocaust and how that event shaped our history and still has an impact on today’s communities.
“The day also allows us to remember the many victims of
subsequent genocides in countries such as Rwanda, Kosovo, Bosnia,
Cambodia and Armenia.
“It is only if we remember the horrors of history that we
have any hope of avoiding repeating them.”
People who would like to attend the Pitzhanger Manor-House memorial discussion can pick up free tickets from Ealing Central Library or book them by phoning 0208 567 3670.
The tree planting ceremony is open to all members of the public.
