Ealing Council is warning party-goers not to make this Christmas memorable for all the wrong reasons.
As the party season swings into action the Council is launching a campaign to encourage people to plan their journey home in advance and not take unnecessary risks.
Community Safety Officers will be out in force across the borough giving people information about personal safety and handing out free travel card wallets with 24-hour numbers for licensed cabs and other useful information.
In particular people are being told not to be tempted to step into illegal mini-cabs. According to the Met Police, last year 140 people were sexually assaulted in illegal cabs in the capital.
Councillor Sue Emment, Cabinet Member for Safer Communities, said: “We want people to go out and enjoy themselves during the festive season, but they need to take sensible safety precautions and not put themselves in danger.
“When it’s late at night and freezing cold it can be tempting to step into a dodgy cab, but it’s never worth the risk. At best you’ll probably be ripped off and asked to pay far more than you should, but at worst you could be the victim of a sex attack.
“We know a lot of Ealing residents will be partying in other parts of London during the festive season and might not have numbers for local cab companies with them. That’s why we’ve produced these wallets. The initiative is part of our drive to make the borough safer and we hope people will take the advice and not put themselves at risk.”
Community safety officers will be distributing the travel card
wallets and other information on:
· Friday 21 December, 9.00 – 11.00 outside Ealing
Broadway Station
· Saturday 29 December 11.00 – 15.00 Arcadia Shopping
Centre, Ealing Broadway
