Free - massive compost give-away (PR 971)
To celebrate International Compost Awareness Week (6-12 May 2007), Ealing Council has 15 tonnes of free compost to give away to local residents.
On Wednesday 9 May, residents will be able to help themselves to as much compost as they want from a giant mound located in the car park of Waitrose, Alexandria Road, West Ealing.
Residents wishing to take advantage of the compost give-away should visit the store from 9am and bring with them a spade and bags, which they will need to fill and remove themselves.
According to Nicola Davidson, Ealing Council Recycling Officer, using compost on your garden can enrich and improve soil quality while keeping garden and food waste out of landfill.
"The compost we are giving away is made up of recycled garden and food waste. We want to show people that if they had their own home compost bin they could have their ongoing source of top quality free compost as well as reducing the amount of waste being transported by the council.
"Currently we have a scheme offering people heavily discounted bins from as little as £8 and will be providing leaflets about how to buy them on the day."
The event, kindly hosted by Waitrose, is expected to be very popular and residents are urged to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
